Microsoft Buys LinkedIn For $26.2 Billion To Expand its Business Products

Microsoft has made a big bet on LinkedIn, announcing Monday that it will spend nearly $26.2 billion in cash to purchase the enterprise-focused social networking and recruiting company.

The acquisition—which is the largest in Microsoft’s history and one of the biggest tech acquisitions ever—will combine the world’s largest enterprise-focused social network with one of the biggest enterprise software companies.

It’s more than just a social play, though. In addition to LinkedIn’s core professional networking product, Microsoft also gains access to products including presentation- sharing software SlideShare and professional training service Lynda.com.

One key purpose of the deal is to expand Microsoft’s portfolio of software that reaches users at work, in a variety of different scenarios.

In a video accompanying the acquisition announcement, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella presented a vision for productivity tools that are connected to a professional network and can help users improve at their existing jobs and find a new ones as well.

Microsoft sees a future where everyone’s LinkedIn profile connects with all of their productivity apps, and automatically syncs information between Office apps. Furthermore, Microsoft plans to drive further personalization of its Cortana virtual assistant using LinkedIn information, so users can get details about upcoming meetings based on the profiles of the people they’re meeting with.

LinkedIn has 433 million registered users worldwide, with 105 million of those users visiting the social network every month. Those are attractive numbers for Microsoft, especially since those people are potential customers for many of the company’s products and services.

Jeff Weiner, LinkedIn’s CEO, will retain control of the company’s operations, and report directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Microsoft says that LinkedIn will retain its brand, culture and independence after the acquisition, which is expected to close by the end of this year.

It’s unclear how far that independence will stretch—Microsoft didn’t say whether it plans to leave LinkedIn’s HR department independent of the company’s central processes in Redmond, for example.

The news comes at a tumultuous time for LinkedIn, which has been performing poorly on Wall Street since the start of 2016. The company’s fourth quarter earnings from 2015 disappointed investors, and its stock hasn’t been able to recover from that precipitous drop.

It also may be a tough pill for Microsoft shareholders to swallow, considering that the company just finished writing down almost all of the value from its acquisition of Nokia in 2013. Since then, Microsoft has massively curtailed its ambitions of being a phone manufacturer and taken $8 billion in write-downs.

Microsoft’s deal with LinkedIn is expected to close by the end of 2016. Microsoft will pay for the massive bill largely by taking on new debt. It has been approved by the boards of both companies, as well as by Reid Hoffman, the LinkedIn co-founder who remains the company’s majority shareholder.

Snapchat Now Has More Daily Users Than Twitter Does

Snapchat now has more active daily users than Twitter, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

Snapchat has 150 million active daily users, up from 110 million in December, Bloomberg reported. Twitter, meanwhile, has less than 140 million.

Even though Snapchat is growing among younger users, Twitter remains a more popular platform for news consumption. Nine percent of American adults use Twitter for news, according to a Pew Research Center study released last week. Just 2 percent of U.S. adults go to Snapchat for news. (Regardless, Facebook is the dominant player: 44 percent of American adults get news on Facebook, the study found.)

As young people flock to Snapchat, news outlets are trying to showcase news on the platform both as live stories and in Discover, where nearly 20 outlets — from The Wall Street Journal and CNN to Tastemade and People — publish unique content exclusive to Snapchat.

Digiday reported Wednesday that Snapchat is set to launch a redesign of its Discover section to try and boost the number of users who use Discover:

Facebook Might Turn Into a Full Advertising Platform in the Next Couple of Years

When Facebook was launched, it was intended to be a social platform where people could express themselves, make new friends, reconnect with people from their pasts, join groups of people with similar interests, and control the information that they share with others. The powers that be at Facebook also made the platform friendly for people who
wanted to interact with one another via chat, or games. Advertising, at least initially, played a minor role. However, this changed throughout the years. Even worse, it is continuing to change, and that change is coming faster and faster. It now seems as if it is an inevitability that Facebook will turn into a full advertising platform.

Why Facebook Users Should be Concerned About Advertising

Initially, advertising on Facebook was not intrusive. There were simply a few ads on the left side of the news feed. However, even back then Facebook was collecting data. Every connection, every like, every new piece of information added to your profile, the groups you join, and more gave Facebook the ability to determine which advertisements would be best for you. Today, they are collecting, even more, information. Think about the recent release of new reaction buttons. Now, instead of simply liking or scrolling by a post, you can express six distinct reactions using Facebook’s newly introduced emojis. The concern about using these to collect data for advertising purposes is large enough that the Belgian police have warned their citizens against using Facebook reactions.

In addition to data collection, there is also the issue of Facebook re-targeting. This is where Facebook partners with businesses to track your browsing habits in order to target you with a second layer of advertising. If you have ever paid a visit to an eCommerce website to research a particular product or service, and then later seen advertisements for that same product or service on your news-feed, that is re-targeting. Essentially, the eCommerce website has fed Facebook the information about your shopping habits, and the fact that you did not make a purchase. In return for this information and payment, Facebook pushes an ad into your news-feed that will hopefully get you primed to make that purchase.

In 2014, Facebook released its Audience Network Platform. This allows advertisers to purchase in-app ad space from any developer using the targeting data that Facebook collects and now provides to third parties. This means that not only does Facebook impact the advertisements you see in your news feed, it also impacts the advertisements you see when you are using apps. Worse, your personal information is being disseminated even more.

Most recently, Facebook is now allowing advertisers to use video ads on its Audience Network platform. These video ads will play in the stream. This means that there is no option to click play or not. The video advertisements will simply play either during, before or after videos that play within the apps that you use. These video ads will also be inserted into your newsfeed via brand’s that participate in Facebook Instant Articles. In other words, companies that were once feeding you news content can now feed you video ads as well.

Facebook users are also simply seeing more advertisements in their newsfeeds. Some of these are labeled as sponsored posts. This at least carries a bit of a warning label that a post is essentially a paid advertisement. Then, there are also suggested posts, suggested groups, and the ever expanding advertising on the right side of your newsfeed. If you are concerned that advertisements are encroaching on your Facebook experience, you should be. Just in terms of physical space on your screen, advertisements are taking over. Then there is the matter of constant exposure to advertising.

For some people, the initial reaction to all of this might be ‘so what?’ After all, what does it matter if some ads show up on your screen, or if some aggregated information is used to help advertisers? There is nothing inherently wrong with web marketing, but there are issues with Facebook’s methods. For one thing, there is the lack of disclosure. Think about it. Has there ever been, at any point a message sent to you from Facebook indicating that they were working with advertisers, or that the information you were providing would be used for advertising purposes? Yet, here we are. If Facebook has not been forthcoming in the past, what will motivate them to be forthcoming in the future?

Then, there is the issue of children. Remember that Facebook is open to people ages 13 and older. This means that thirteen to seventeen-year-olds are also subject to having their personal information collected and sent to advertisers. Think about that. Teenagers, who in many households are the most likely to have their profiles completed with all of their likes and dislikes, who play games via apps on Facebook, who share like and react to content , and who don’t have the experience and judgment of an adult, are being targeted with these advertising efforts. That is something that should be alarming to everybody.

Will Facebook Change in The Future

Right now, it seems unlikely that Facebook will deviate from the trajectory it is on. In fact, if anything, it is more likely that it will accelerate. After all, Facebook is making more and more money from the information that it collects and uses to woo advertisers. As long as it is able to do that without receiving any significant pushback from users, why wouldn’t it stay on its current path. It does not appear as if it will be too long before Facebook truly becomes a full advertising platform.
As a result, a place that was once meant for communicating and expressing ourselves will simply be a place where people go to unwittingly consume ads in exchange for brief moments of entertainment and connection. The only way to get Facebook to put the brakes on this will be through raising awareness, and reducing apathy. When people stop willingly or unthinkingly feeding Facebook the information it uses to exploit them, things might change.

These days, an iPhone 6 in half-decent condition sells for about $400. So why exactly are people willing to pay upwards of $50,000 for an older, weirder iPhone 6?

The description claims it’s “bought from a friend,” which is really just one step up from “fell off the back of a truck.” Because it’s allegedly a prototype, it has no serial number or FCC branding. I bought this item from a friend of mine, it is a iPhone 6 prototype, it has no FCC logos, Serial Number or Imei.

From what I know it runs a debugging OS called SwitchBoard and features a red lightning dock port with a serial number of C39NW00KG876

The software is the really interesting part here. SwitchBoard is an operating system used internally by Apple for bug testing, and it’s allegedly far more hackable than stock iOS. That could let the future owner do all sorts of things to the device that would be impossible with a stock iPhone.

Of course, there’s also the distinct possibility that this is a knockoff iPhone running some old, buggy software, masquerading as a prototype. But that hasn’t dissuaded buyers — the price is at $53,000 at the time of writing, and rising rapidly.

The End Of Windows Phone Is Near

Gartner’s latest statistics release has no good news for Windows Phone and its fans. Its Worldwide Smartphone Sales to End Users by Operating System in 1st quarter 2016 indicates that Windows Phone’s share of the global smartphone market has dropped to 0.7%. That is a 72% drop from last year. A case of broken windows, it is.

       BlackBerry OS is even further down in the trench at 0.2%. With BlackBerry no longer making new BB OS devices, that share will plunge even further.

       iOS’ share dropped too from about 17% last year to 14.8%

       Android OS – the only platform that is growing right now – is at an all-time high of 84.1%

       All the other platforms put together – Tizen, Sailfish, Firefox, Ubuntu, etc – all total another 0.2%. Apparently,
Smartphones running Tizen OS aren’t selling as much as some people would like us to believe.

Broken Windows

How badly are the Windows broken? Not only has Windows Phone’s market share dropped to 0.7%, but a MGnaija poll indicates that 73% of users use them as backup devices, not as their primary smartphone. In other words, approximately only 0.5% of global smartphone users actually use a Windows Phone as their daily smartphone.

I am a Windows Phone lover myself, but my Lumia 950 serves only as my office PC (via Continuum). I carry an Android smartphone as my daily driver now.

Someone said to me yesterday, “Please ask the guys at windows phone to do something about data consumption. I’m on my 2nd windows phone and it’s been a nice experience. But I won’t be getting another one at this rate.”

My reply? “The guys at Windows Phone do not seem to listen to users. Everything we have asked for over the years have been ignored. I am done with them.”

There are a hundred and one things that users have asked of Microsoft over the years. Microsoft has been hard of hearing.

Now with a global market share below 1%, I can say to myself that Windows on mobile is broken, shattered even. And that is such a shame.

Check The Most Expensive HP Laptops Sold For $60,000

If you think you have one of the most expensive notebooks in the world, perhaps you didn’t know HP recently sold just two laptops at a price that could buy a decent house. Before you conclude that this is outrageous, you should know that these are not regular laptops you can find on the shelf everywhere.

HP has revealed that it’s two gold- and diamond-encrusted laptops have been sold for over $60,000 but no one knows how much each costs. The identity of the buyers too were not revealed. The two Spectre 13.3 laptops were custom modified and designed with gold, diamond and Swarovski crystals. The design was done by renowned artists Jess Hannah and Tors Boontje.

The laptops were auctioned at the Cannes Film Festival this week and proceeds from the auction will go into charity. The main beneficiary is the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The specifications of the sold laptops too are not revealed but they are likely Core i7 Skylake computers. We recently took a look at the recently released Spectre 13 called “the world’s thinnest notebook” but we don’t know if the specifications are based on it.

Foxconn Bought The Nokia Name For $350m Nokia Will Be Fully Back

Nokia will be coming back with full force. Nokia Smartphones will make a mega comeback in a brand licensing deal made by the Finnish company with HMD Global Ltd. to manufacture Android based Nokia branded handsets for the next 10 years.

Microsoft has just sold the Nokia Name to Foxconn but Microsoft has transferred the rights to use the Nokia brand and feature to HMD. So Nokia Name is no longer dead, Microsoft will be bringing the Name to life.

Foxconn and HMD bought the Nokia’s Feature Phone Business From Microsoft with the sum of $350 Million. HMD, a newly formed Finnish company, aims to be only global licensee for Nokia branded mobile phones and tablets.

But in recent years, Foxconn has shown signs of desire for a more public profile. In 2014, the Taiwanese company began developing its own mobile accessories, but denied that it planned to enter the smartphone market directly.

That is still technically true. Following the sale of Nokia, a Foxconn subsidiary, FIH, will acquire everything left of Microsoft’s feature phone business. After the dust settles, HMD will be running the Nokia brand with Foxconn as an exclusive licensee.

When Microsoft bought Nokia ,in 2014, for US $7.2 Billion, the Redmond based computing giant dropped the name “Nokia” and continued to use the name Lumia.

In a statement, Nokia said: “HMD and Nokia Technologies have signed an agreement with FIH to establish a collaboration framework to support the building of a global business for Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets”.

The telecommunications industry report for the first quarter of 2016 has shown Globacom, maintain the no 1 position as Nigeria preferred network in terms of new data subscribers.

The industry statistics for the first quarter of 2016 revealed that Globacom had a total of 26,530,420 data subscribers as at March 31, 2016 , indicating an addition of 1,448,354 new customers in the first three months of the year.

In January, the company had 354,178 new data users, 248,593 in February and 845, 583 in March.

The company’s figure of 1,448,354 for the three months under review represents 80% of the total number of 1,820,651 new customers who subscribed to internet services of the four major telecom operators in the first quarter of this year.
The period within review has not been favorable to other telecom providers…

Airtel recorded 319,229 new data subscribers for the three months, while Etisalat had an addition of 53,068 new internet users on the network during the period. Both account for the remaining 20% of new internet user within the the first 3 months.

The worst hit was MTN which lost over 6,500,000 internet users during the period. The network began the quarter with 39, 924, 737 data users on its network and ended it with 33,356,595 .
MTN, Airtel and Etisalat all lost data subscribers. MTN lost almost 2 million subscribers , Airtel lost close to
900,000 subscribers, while Etisalat lost 408,282 subscribers.

MTN Lunches Business Cloud In Nigeria

MTN Business has unveiled a new cloud delivery platform in Nigeria, which will enable SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) access cloud services with greater ease.

The applications on the MTN Business Cloud Services platform range from Security, Storage and Backup to Email Marketing, Contacts Management and Accounting applications.

MTN Executive, Amina Oyagbola, said, “The launch of this cloud service is a step in the right direction. It translates to facilitating greater ease of doing business for SMEs whose role in creating employment and empowering people cannot be overemphasized in emerging economies like Nigeria. According to the World Bank, SMEs have been recognised as a key sector in local economies, particularly in emerging markets, where formal SMEs contribute up to 45% of total employment and up to 33% of GDP.”

Based on a survey by SMEDAN (Small & Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria), there are over 37 million SMEs across Nigeria. Cloud platforms therefore represent a veritable means to drive technological inclusion in this critical sector.

Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, General Manager, Enterprise Marketing, lauded the benefits of the service; “We believe that SMEs are invaluable to the growth of the Nigerian economy. That is why this platform was developed to address some of the challenges experienced by our SME customers, in particular. At MTN Business, we are aware that to enable the growth of this key sector, easier access to solutions such as cloud, that drive efficiency and lower costs is vital.”

Speaking further on the Business Cloud service which was also recently deployed in Rwanda and Cameroun, Ikenna-Emeka said, “We are pleased that this service, represents a move that empowers SMEs to control their spend and usage.

Through this service, SMEs can choose from a range of applications, subscribing to chosen applications when and wherever they want without paying for the total cost of the applications. This way spend is kept manageable. These business applications can be accessed from anywhere at anytime and compete favourably with other world class cloud platforms”.

MTN Business Cloud Services will be denominated in local currency thereby making payment easy and services more affordable. The roll out of the platform in other MTN markets is set for the end of the year.
